Suburban Observation
This project tasked us with creating a publication that communicates the ‘place’ of a suburb in the greater Melbourne area. A place can be understood as a specific location or site, but it is also a feeling or mood that has been constructed based on cultural understandings, practices, and experiences. The idea of place includes physical aspects related to the natural or built environment and also those more related to emotional and value-driven qualities, which have been developed and are practised by the people who live or spend time there.
The concept of this publication was to present a playful, theatrical depiction of Toorak, contrasting its perceived ostentatious stature among the Australian public. Walking around the suburb, nature and plant life are in abundance, with many of the gardens of these extravagant homes close to being overtaken by their environment. The intention of this publication was to present a theoretical idea of how the suburb could appear if all preconceived ideas of its wealth and grandeur were ‘thrown out the window’.
